As this report notes, the average young person in Australia finally leaves home at the age of 24 years, usually after having made two previous attempts to leave.

Most children have family support, education and employment, and social networks. Under the current regime of the Children and Young Persons Act, young people in care are expected to move to independent living at the age of 18, with very little support.
