At MacKillop Family Services, our work is to support children and young people who are unable to live at home, and the foster carers who look after them.

Below are the stories of some children and young people in care that provide a snapshot insight into their lives, experiences and achievements within the care system. At MacKillop, we are proud of every young person we support and encourage every child to pursue their goals and dreams.

Lina* had never had a birthday cake before along with the joy of celebrating her birthday. Her carer made a cake that she designed for the birthday celebration.

Young people in care have so many additional barriers to just living an ordinary life and helping them along the way and giving them a chance will benefit all of society.

Karl*, who is a proud Yorta Yorta child, recently took a trip to the You Yangs Regional Park to connect to country. He has worked with both his support workers to learn new life skills and help him with his independence.

Rishi* worked hard to achieve his goal of getting his driver’s license. His support worker dedicated late nights and early mornings to take Rishi driving, helping him log the necessary hours to successfully get his license.

Rishi passed his test and is enjoying the independence that being able to drive brings. He is thriving now he has the support he needs.

The team around Ann*, a non-English speaking child in care, felt she would benefit from mentoring and cultural support from within her community. It was difficult to find the right volunteer who met all the needed criteria but eventually Jen* applied. Her similar cultural background, ability to speak the same language, and refugee experience made her the ideal mentor for Ann.

In just three meetings Ann began to open up, set personal goals, and make positive changes in her life.

The experience was rewarding for not just Ann, but Jen too. With the two bonding over activities such as cooking and meaningful conversation.
