A Brighton family of foster carers

Posted on 3 Sep 2014

Brighton couple Sonia and Phil, who have two children of their own, have been foster carers since 2007 and have cared for ten children in that time.

They are urging more people to consider becoming foster carers with MacKillop Family Services this national Foster Care Week (September 14 to 20).

“We had finally got around to having our own family and now we had time at home to share that we didn’t have before,” said Sonia. “We wanted to share our time in a way where we weren’t taking time away from our own children. Foster care was the best, and most meaningful way, to do this.”

The couple has cared for children of different ages and from various backgrounds. Some have stayed with them for three months, while another has been with them for seven years.

“The biggest impact on our family has been the exposure to alternative family lifestyles and cultures. Foster care shows you that not every family is the same and there are many different ways to live — and no one way is the only or best way,” Sonia said.

National Foster Care Week highlights the urgent need for more foster carers in the community, with more than 40,000 children experiencing out-of-home care in 2013 across Australia*.

“Many people often comment that they have thought about becoming foster carers themselves but for one reason or another, haven’t taken that leap,” said Sonia. “This week is the perfect week to find out more,”

MacKillop provides all foster carers with ongoing support, training and regular breaks.
