Elwood family adds a foster child to their brood

Posted on 3 Sep 2014

Elwood residents Rebecca and Graham Matthews, along with their two sons aged five and seven, have recently added another child to their brood after becoming foster carers with MacKillop Family Services.

The family currently cares for a 16-month-old boy, who will be with them long-term.

Rebecca and Graham are urging more people to consider becoming foster carers during this year’s national Foster Care Week (September 14 to 20).

“So far it has been incredibly positive for us,” Graham said. “Our own kids are really benefiting from the experience and seeing how they can help other children in the future.”

Rebecca and Graham have found that the young addition to their family has not had as great an impact as many people might imagine.

“A day in our house with a foster child is much the same as a day in our house without one… only with nappy changes!” Graham joked.

“The kids all wake up the same time, eat, bathe and go to bed at the same time. The only difference is there are now nap times and nappies to consider.”

National Foster Care Week highlights the urgent need for more foster carers in the community, with more than 40,000 children experiencing out-of-home care in 2013 across Australia*.

“Many people often say to us that they have thought about becoming foster carers themselves but for one reason or another, haven’t taken that leap,” said Graham. “This week is the perfect week to find out more.”

MacKillop provides all foster carers with ongoing support, training and regular breaks.
