MacKillop Family Services welcomes review of support services for vulnerable children and families

MacKillop Family Services welcomes today’s announcement by the Minister for Families and Children, Jenny Mikakos, of an in-depth investigation into Victoria’s child protection and family services programs.

The Roadmap for Reform: Strong Families, Safe Children will provide a valuable opportunity for community service organisations, service users, government and the broader community to share their insights into how we can provide better outcomes for vulnerable children and families.

Micaela Cronin, CEO of MacKillop Family Services, said she was particularly pleased with the broad scope of the review, which will investigate services from early intervention programs aimed at preventing abuse, through to the out of home care system, which supports children and young people who cannot live safely with their parents.

“Our experience shows that in order to achieve the best outcomes for vulnerable children and families, we all need to work collaboratively across the full spectrum of services from family support, right through to child protection,” she said.

“This announcement strikes me as a very positive step that demonstrates a real commitment to examine the sector as a whole.”

“We look forward to contributing to the system-wide reform and exploring how we can support initiatives such as better information-sharing between agencies, enhanced workforce capacity, and expansion of the therapeutic care models for young people in out-of-home care, to better respond to the needs of  vulnerable children and young people.”
