State Award for work with children with a disability in Melbourne's Western suburbs

MacKillop Family Services’ Emma Leunig was recognised for her commitment to inclusive activities for children and young people at the annual Victorian Protection Children Awards which took place on Monday 3 September.

Emma, who works as MacKillop’s Community Inclusion Coordinator, received the ‘Modelling a Generous Community’ Award which was established by the Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People and recognises an individual, team or group who has made a significant contribution to enhancing the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable Victorian children.

Coordinating six programs across Metro West and Geelong, Emma is passionate about social inclusion for children and young people with a disability. This passion is demonstrated in her commitment to the children, young people and families she works with,

“I feel so honoured that my work with young people and their families has been acknowledged by this award. I have always made it a priority to listen to children and young people and ensure they are heard, respected and safe.

“Developing close and meaningful relationships with families helps me gain a strong understanding of the challenges they face and provide additional support they might need. I’ve been with MacKillop for 13 years and I see this award as an acknowledgement of the whole team as well as celebrating the strength and resilience of the young people I have the privilege to work with.” Emma said.

Congratulating Emma on receiving the Award, Mary D’Elia, MacKillop’s General Manager Community Programs, said,

“Emma is an inspiration to everyone who meets her. Her passion to do the best for children and young people with a disability and their families informs and drives the programs we run.

“Driven by social justice, Emma supports her team to maintain a social justice focus in their work to ensure children of all abilities are provided opportunities for meaningful engagement in their communities. She is a strong support to her team of facilitators and we are all delighted to see her commitment, compassion and hard work acknowledged in this way,” added Mary.
