You cast wide across NSW when you know that fewer and fewer people are applying to be foster carers in the state.
This is reflected in statistics from the Office of the Children’s Guardian which show a drop in carer applications between the first and last quarters of 2023.
That’s why MacKillop Family Services will be at the Primex
agricultural expo in Casino from 16-18 May.
“Finding foster carers for children in out-of-home care has never been more challenging,” says Patricia Maher, NSW Carer Recruitment and Development Manager at MacKillop. “If being at events like Primex will help us find and recruit more foster carers, then that is what we will do.”
MacKillop’s Carer Recruitment and Development team is frequently at public events, asking communities to open their homes to vulnerable children until they can return safely to their families. “We ask people to take small steps, to find out if the foster journey is something that would work for them. We support them with training and development each step of the way.”
Foster carer Janiece and husband Ian from Ballina have looked after nine-year-old Rachelle* for four years.
Rachelle lives with a disability, something Janiece was familiar with as a special education teacher working with children with disabilities.
“Building a rapport with your young person is important. Ask about their interests, what they like or don’t like, and listen without judgement. Be patient with them, and learn what might trigger them and cause them to behave in a certain way."
“It takes quality time to be successful at this. I have lots to do at work and outside of it, but that doesn’t stop me from fostering. Your time... that’s what you give up when you foster, but it is still a really lovely thing to do.
"I love watching Rachelle grow and become more confident. We think of her wellbeing in the long term and are trying to set up life for her before we are gone.”
