Western Australia will proudly host Foster Care Week celebrations from 27 July to 3 August 2025, recognising the vital role foster carers play in creating brighter futures for children and young people.
MacKillop Family Services is celebrating Foster Care Week with the theme “Foster a Brighter Future”, to honour the incredible compassion, dedication and resilience of Western Australia’s foster carers - everyday people who are committed to providing safety, stability and hope to children unable to live at home.
As the first state to mark this important occasion in 2025, WA sets the tone for a national celebration of foster care, with other states following in September. Throughout the week, events and activities will acknowledge the life-changing impact of foster carers and highlight the need for more people to consider this meaningful role.
Kellie Goes, WA State Director for MacKillop says foster care week is a time for the agency to thank its carers and let the wider community know about the need for carers and that being a foster carer can be a worthwhile and rewarding role.
“Foster carers come from a variety of backgrounds. In WA, we're fortunate to have a diverse group of carers who dedicate time and effort to providing loving homes for young people. If you can offer a safe and welcoming environment, and you have compassion and kindness, you have what it takes to be a carer.”
"Fostering can have a long-term impact and be incredibly rewarding for everyone involved as relationships between carers and the young people they look after often endure into adulthood.”
22-year-old Sas, who spent time in foster care and now works in Family Support is living proof of the positive impact of foster care, “You can’t underestimate the value of stability and unconditional love. My carers encouraged me to dream and to understand that I too could have a happy family life and work in a career I am passionate about. They really did help me achieve a brighter future.”
Foster Care Week is a time to thank carers and to raise awareness of the ongoing need for compassionate people to step forward and support children and young people when they need it most.
