Just as a coolamon holds and protects what is important, this program seeks to hold space for hard conversations, carry the weight of lived experiences, and support the safe nurturing of change.
The aim of the Coolamon program is to:
- Provide a healing space for children, young people and their families; one which is culturally safe and trauma responsive
- Support and educate children, family and community around healthy sexual development, unsafe sexual behaviours and relationships
- Create safety for children and young people as individuals, as well as for peers and families
- Support services to increase their understanding of unsafe sexual behaviours and how best to respond
- Provide psychoeducation and consultation to enhance safety for children, young people, family, community and service providers.
The Coolamon program is available to those who can access service in Port Hedland. The program focuses on priority responses for children experiencing the highest vulnerability and risk.
