Living in kinship care with his grandmother since infancy, Jayden* experienced significant early trauma and lives with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, PTSD, and multiple learning difficulties.
At the start of 2024, Jayden began Grade Three at our MacKillop Education Maidstone school. Jayden has lived with his grandmother in kinship care since infancy and has faced significant early trauma, along with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, PTSD and several learning difficulties.
By the age of nine, Jayden had been excluded from two schools due to serious behavioural challenges and was only able to access learning remotely, with minimal engagement.
Jayden’s story is a powerful example of how healing, connection and tailored support can transform lives.
Socially and emotionally, Jayden is thriving. He’s forming friendships, engaging with staff and participating in group activities with joy and confidence.
Jayden’s grandmother remains a vital partner in his journey, actively contributing to his education and celebrating his progress. Her hope for full-time attendance is now within reach.
When he arrived at MacKillop Education, he was welcomed with compassion and a therapeutic, trauma-informed approach. His transition began with a two-hour daily timetable, supported by trusted adults and structured routines.
Staff built safety and trust through low-pressure social activities and tailored learning experiences that honoured his interests, like Lego and baking, and rebuilt his confidence as a learner.
Through consistent, relational support and a refined safety plan, Jayden has made remarkable progress. He now attends school for part of the day, every school day, fully integrated with his peers.
His academic growth is evident, with significant academic improvements.
Beyond the classroom, Jayden has embraced visual arts, music, canine and martial arts therapy. His story reflects MacKillop’s commitment to healing, early intervention, and sustainable change through meaningful relationships.
