A vibrant piece of artwork has transformed the Mobile Children’s Service ute in Brewarrina.
Aboriginal woman Naomi Train – who delivers outreach education programs to disadvantaged and isolated families living in rural NSW – designed the artwork to reflect her own story and connection with Country.
Naomi followed an intuition to move to the remote town 10 years ago and only later realised that it was a spiritually significant place of her ancestors.
“The art came from processing grief and celebrating life,” says Naomi. “It was a deep, emotional process of recognising ancient paths and realising that my time to walk these paths is limited.”
The artwork features five circles, representing where the communities meet along the rivers, including the Barwon river which is home to Brewarrina’s Ngunnhu (fish traps). Working closely with Elders she included totems that represent each of the communities she visits, including the Googar (goanna), Bundah (kangaroo) and Dinnawan (Emu).
