A journey of strength, healing, and hope

Paula* is a beacon of strength and resilience.

Paula, a proud member of the Gamilaraay whose traditional lands encompass a significant portion of inland New South Wales, has shown great courage and dedication to her family, even in the face of great challenges.

In 2022, Paula and her son Gregory* joined MacKillop’s Sing & Grow music group, a program that uses music to support children, parents and communities to build relationships, increase connection and support child development through music.

By February 2023 she was feeling overwhelmed and depressed, brought on by the lingering effects of family violence. Paula took the brave step to self-refer to the Engaging Melton Families program.

At that time, her world felt like it was crumbling. She was dealing with systemic abuse, had been misidentified as a perpetrator of violence, and was facing charges that not only cost her a job but also threatened her goal of working with children.

Despite these challenges, Paula never wavered in her commitment to her children and her future. With Engaging Melton Families’ support, she worked hard to establish a safe environment for herself and reclaim her story as a victim-survivor.

Paula continued her university studies, engaged in counselling, and provided round-the-clock care for her terminally ill father. At the same time, she advocated for Gregory, securing his diagnosis of Autism and severe speech delay, and ensured he received NDIS support.

Where many would understandably feel overwhelmed, Paula remained dedicated. Even in the most stressful moments, she showed up for her children, for herself, and for her healing.

What makes Paula truly extraordinary is not just her endurance, but her transformation. Initially feeling powerless and let down by systems that had failed her, she gradually began to trust again. In her work with Engaging Melton Families, she opened up about her family's experiences of intergenerational trauma and expressed a deep, commitment to breaking that cycle.

With the support with her MacKillop Practitioner, Paula actively explored new parenting approaches and created opportunities for emotional growth and healthy communication within her family. Through guided discussions and shared activities, she taught her children the power of deep listening and helped them develop tools to build respectful, loving relationships.

When I was depressed, I wasn’t emotionally available. Now I feel able to listen to my kids and we’re closer than ever.
