A meaningful connection with a Paw Pals therapy dog helped six-year-old Amelia* build confidence, regulate her emotions, and rediscover a love of learning.
When six-year-old Amelia started school, she faced significant challenges with school readiness and emotional regulation. The busy school environment often felt overwhelming, and during difficult moments, Ameia found it hard to stay engaged in learning. With the support of a reduced timetable and one-on-one assistance, Amelia was doing her best to navigate each school day.
Despite these challenges, Amelia is a gentle and caring child. When calm, her warmth shines through - especially in the strong, loving bond she shares with her grandmother, who is her primary carer. Amelia* also had positive experiences with pets at home, which became a powerful bridge to her next steps in learning.
Through the Paw Pals program, Amelia experienced a different kind of learning environment - one built on calm, consistency and connection. Alongside facilitator Jane* and therapy dog Minnie*, she began with small, meaningful steps. Learning how to interact with and care for Minnie gave Amelia a sense of responsibility, while the calm and predictable nature of each Paw Pals session, helped her feel settled and secure to take on new learning tasks.
As trust grew, so did Amelia’s confidence. With Minnie by her side, she began reading stories, practicing new skills, and engaging in learning in new and meaningful ways. Over time, there was a noticeable shift. Amelia was able to stay focused for longer manage her emotions more consistently, and approach learning with greater ease. The connection she formed with both Jane and Minnie became a steady foundation for this growth.
What began as a connection with a therapy dog became a pathway to confidence, emotional regulation, and renewed engagement in learning. By meeting Amelia* where she was and building on her strengths, Paw Pals helped turn moments of overwhelm into opportunities for connection and growth. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support and delivered with care, patience, and understanding children can thrive.
