Isaac is passionate about supporting families and it is this passion that led Isaac to complete his Master’s Degree with a focus on treating attachment trauma. We sat down with Isaac to talk more about his role as Family Therapy Supervisor.
How would you describe your job to a child?
This is an important question, particularly for our Aboriginal children as it is vital that they have a positive experience of a ‘service’. The children in the families I work with have often already experienced contact with child protection. I explain to older kids that a therapist’s job is to find out about the strengths of your family and help you figure out what everyone wants, and needs, to achieve and how to accomplish it.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
Having an opportunity to work with Indigenous families through the Function Family Therapy program. Personally, growth and change! My experience at MacKillop has been abundant with opportunities which have encouraged personal and professional growth, including being a leader of a fantastic team that hold the best interests of clients at heart and always strive for best practice.
What is something that motivates you?
The shared feeling created from working with families with complex presentations and watching their emergence into a healthier place.
Can you tell me more about other parts of your role?
As a Gamilaraay man working on Dharawal country it is my responsibility to work towards improving the lives of the local Indigenous Community. I have been working with the Remote Indigenous Community team in Wollongong to set up the Indigenous care packages in our location. We are currently in the process of putting together our first package and look forward to many more to come.
Thanks Isaac for taking the time to chat with us.
