Ariana found steady support through MacKillop’s Family Preservation and Reunification team, helping her rebuild stability, confidence, and a hopeful path toward reconnecting with her baby.
Engagement was difficult at first, as Ariana was facing the weight of family violence, unstable housing, mental health struggles, and the experience of being neurodivergent.
She felt that people in authority saw her as just a child, overlooking the fierce determination she carried as a mother. But slowly, through consistent and compassionate support, things began to shift.
When Ariana had her baby at 16, she found herself navigating the complexities of parenting, while still growing up herself. Having previously been supported through our Mallee Family Preservation and Reunification Response program, Ariana knew how important it was to get the right help and advice when her baby was taken into care.
Ariana began going to the gym, attending appointments, and showing up for herself and her child.
Today, Ariana sees her baby twice every week at our offices in Bendigo, as she feels safe and supported there. Baby has a little book, filled out by carers to record milestones and moments, keeping Ariana connected to her child’s growth and development.
The Family Preservation and Reunification Response team quickly established a bond with Ariana. They walked together, using movement and fitness as a way to regulate emotions and build trust.
These walks became more than just exercise; they were moments of connection, where Ariana learned to advocate for herself, not just as a young person, but as a parent.
Together, they explored why her baby had been taken into care. It was painful, but necessary. With honesty and empathy, they worked through each issue, building a roadmap toward reunification. Through this journey, Ariana has gained more than just parenting skills. She learned how to navigate conflict and repair relationships.
Ariana’s story is still unfolding, but every step she takes is a testament to her resilience. She is not just working toward reunification, she is building a life where she and her baby can thrive, together.
